 LIZARD FISH
(Synodus foetens)


 Distribution & Size

The Lizard Fish (Synodus foetens) is found both Inshore & Offshore but both are different species. The Offshore variety being much smaller. They are distributed throughout Florida, the Bahamas and the Caribbean. The Inshore Lizard fish is coastal. The Inshore Lizard Fish is larger than it's counterpart and is usually 15 to 16 inches in length. They can be a real nuisance when trolling and will attack any size lure.

World Record is 2 lbs.

 General Information

Both Offshore and Inshore Lizard fish are similar in looks but the Offshore variety are colored in shades of brown with dark blotches and has a blunter head and larger mouth. Both species have a fine set of teeth.

 Tackle & Bait

The species is not targeted and is usually caught when fishing for other species. They can be classified as a nuisance and will tackle any size plug without a problem.


 Eating Qualities

Not very good and is bony.
